What I'm Reading

The book that I just finished is called Turtle in Paradise by Jennifer L. Holm (Random House, 2010).  It's set in Key West, FL in 1935, and follows an 11-year-old girl named Turtle who is sent down to stay with her aunt in Key West, but discovers that her visit is unexpected.  Her encounters with the Diaper Gang, Slow Poke, and Nana Philly, just to name a few, introduce her to a vastly different life than the one in New Jersey to which she's accustomed.

  1. I am very intrigued by the "Diaper Gang." What is it?!

Have you ever been to Key West? My parents used to take me there on vacation when I was younger. It is such a unique place with a very local culture. I hope the author captured the setting well.

  2. This sounds interesting. Florida is definitely very different from New Jersey even without the Diaper Gang and Slow Poke (whoever he/she/they/it) are.

  3. When I was Turtle'a age, I visited Key Wes with my family. I remember the loooong bridges and the beautiful water. I also remember a closing fighting scene in an action movie that took place over one of those bridges. Turtle is a great name...my daughter loves turtles and if she could have changed her name when she was younger, I think she would have changed it to Turtle. Looking forward to seeing your vidoe...will check back later.
